FRANCIS, Harry Reed, of Castro Valley, passed away on Sunday, November 4, 2012, at age 79. Mr. Francis was an active and respected member of the community who served in various roles for some 40 years. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, at Transfiguration Catholic Church, 4000 E. Castro Valley Blvd. Donations may be made in Harry’s name to Sulphur Creek Nature Center in Hayward.
JOSEPH, Thomas John, of Castro Valley, died suddenly on Saturday, November 3, 2012, at age 58. Mr. Joseph was a member of the Willow Park Association. He had been a girls softball coach in Castro Valley. Private interment will be held at a later date.
LEE, Helen Josephine, of Castro Valley, passed away on Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at age 88. A native of Washington, Mrs. Lee was a member of Redwood Chapel Community Church in Castro Valley for almost five decades. A memorial service was held at Redwood Chapel in Castro Valley at 3 p.m. on Nov. 10.
RADERMAN, Sophia Elise Campbell, June 26, 1989 ~ August 27, 2012, passed away at her family home, where she was also born, on Monday, August 27, 2012. She was a free spirit and a witty hopeless romantic who genuinely appreciated the little things in life. Sophia was a student at Las Positas Community College, and a graduate of Castro Valley High School. She loved to travel and had a passionate creativity, which produced a wonderful legacy through living life in her own unique style and sharing her quirky wisdom in a way only she could pull off. Sophia leaves behind her parents, Michael Raderman and Sarah Linda Gossett-Raderman; her 2 brothers, Chet and Zach Gossett; grandparents, Estelle Raderman, and Jim and Sarah Joanne Campbell; aunts, Leslie and Marlene Raderman, Cathy Ellison, and Nancy Brown, including their families. Sophia had many good friends and her little dog “Peepsqueak” who will all miss her very much. “Sophie, a princess who is too weird to live and too rare to die. Love to those who keep me grounded… and even with the lights off we’ll glow.” A touching memorial took place September 1, 2012 at the family’s Victorian home and gardens in Castro Valley, California. In her honor, donations may be made to the SPCA.
RUBIO, Carmen Cuenca, of Castro Valley, passed away on Wednesday, October 31, 2012, at age 87. Mrs. Rubio was owner of the former Carmen’s Beauty Salon in downtown Hayward. A memorial and reception will be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 17 at Willow Park Golf Course at 17007 Redwood Road.
VANDERBILT, Sharon Lea, of Castro Valley, passed away on Wednesday, November 7, 2012, at age 66. A native of Berkeley, Mrs. Vanderbilt worked for more than 20 years for Macys and over 12 years for St. Rose Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Nov. 16, at Pioneer Chapel, 1046 Grove Way, Hayward. Arrangements were made by DeerCreek Funeral Service (510) 317-7890
YOTHERS, Chester D., who lived in Castro Valley fo 62 years, passed away at his home on Tuesday, October 30, 2012, at age 94. A native of Calaveras County, Mr. Yothers owned Plaza Pharmacy and later, Abreu’s Pharmacy, both in San Leandro. A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, in the chapel of Neighborhood Church, Castro Valley, with a reception to follow.
